Blog Banter 79 – Rewarding the Vets?

Should CCP put more effort into rewards for loyal customers? The mystery code from the collector’s edition hasn’t seen much use and whilst veteran rewards have been mentioned by CCP several times at Fanfests, we have seen nothing. Wasn’t there talk of a special station only 10-year vets could dock in at one point?

Is this lack of gratitude towards loyal customers alienating? Do people wish for a change here? Is it too self-righteous to expect small signs of gratitude for being a loyal customer? Is a customer purchasing half a year in advance more loyal than someone plexing every now and than probably missing out a few weeks or months a year? How do CCP place rewards in game without hurting the economy?

Or is it just a case of there is no need and HTFU snowflake?

Blog banters always bring out interesting discussions, that’s for sure!

As an almost 7 year veteran of Eve online, I’m in an interesting spot here. The last few years have seen some interesting changes, and over all the game that I started playing in June 2010, is very different to the game that we play now. Since I started playing, there’s been a number of re-balances, new features and removals in the game.

  • Planetary Interaction
  • New 3d Full Body avatars
  • Incursions
  • Walking in Stations (sort-of)
  • New hangars
  • Tiercide
  • Launch of Dust 514
  • T3 Destroyers (T3 cruisers came about a year before me!)
  • Primae and Noctis
  • Citadels
  • Removal of Off-Grid-Boosting
  • Removal of Medical Clones
  • Increase in number of Jump clones you can have
  • Decrease in time between Jump clones
  • Decrease in downtime (It was an hour every day when I started!)
  • Removal of 6 monthly expansions
  • The death of Dust 514
  • Crime Watch
  • Countless others I can’t think off right now…

Having been here to see all these changes, and more, has been an interesting ride. And for those that have been here since 2003, in the Beta stages even, it must be even crazier for them! But does that necessarily mean we deserve something special? That… I’m not sure of. Sure, we can all say “I’ve been playing EVE Online since 20XX” but can we all honestly say that it’s the same game that we’ve been playing? Or even that we’ve been playing in the same way? For me personally, I used to feel a tight bond with The Black Rabbits and The Guristas Associates. I even spoke about this in BB39. Yet, even at that time I was starting to get more and more involved in Incursions and not long after that post, went full time incursion running. It would be soon coming up to 5 years since I started running incursions almost full time. It’s been an interesting ride and it’s definitely changed over the years. The different Incursion groups that have risen and fallen have definitely been a part of that.

As time goes on though, players change, communities change, and the game changes. Eve Online isn’t like Minesweeper, or Chess. The rules don’t stay the same over time, and the game itself changes.

I have been playing another game, Ingress, since 2014. It’s been an interesting game to play. As some people may or may not know, the makers of Ingress give out achievements each year to players. The level of this achievement that they get depends on what level they are at that point in time. Ingress is only ~3.5 years old now, but it’s still interesting to see who does, and doesn’t have the different badges and to see what levels they have in them. I don’t have the ‘Founders’ badge, which was given to people on the 1 year anniversary of Ingress. But I’ve gotten the year 2 and year 4 badges. You can use them to see just how far I’ve levelled up during that time. Ingress is very different than Eve though, as there’s very set level. It’s not like Eve where ‘Levels’ is a very broad term, and even with high in game skills, you can still be a noob. So, using a methodology like that would be very inaccurate!

Would it be nice if CCP gave us something to recognise that we’ve stuck it out with them, and stuck it out with EVE? Definitely. Being able to look back over the years and say “I earned this item because I’ve been playing Eve for X number of years” would be very cool, and it would help add to the story of the game. But ultimately, I don’t think we deserve it. I think that if CCP ever does implement any kind of ‘Veteran Only’ feature, or station etc, that would be amazing and we should respect them if they ever do, and appreciate it. With that being said… a lot of us already have something similar, with our names on the Two Worlds Monument in Iceland.

At the same time though, I think that it’s entirely up to CCP to do this, and they do not NEED to do it. Until they decide to do such a thing… we should respect CCP and their wishes. It’s their story after all, we’re just the characters in it.
